SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION
Female sexual dysfunction can present in a number of different ways and there are 4 major categories.
- Lack of interest in sex. If this is of recent onset it can be the result of hormonal or other health problems. It can also be due to a lack of attraction to a partner rather than a general lack of interest in sex.
Long standing lack of interest may indicate a more psychological basis to the problem. - Inability to become aroused or lack of clitoral sensitivity, frequently has a hormonal basis and is common in peri-menopause and menopause.
- Inability to orgasm or orgasms that fizzle out. Once again there is often a hormonal basis for the problem and the problem is common in peri-menopause and menopause.
- Painful intercourse. In younger women this can be due to structural problems or psychological issues.
In older women it is most frequently associated with vaginal dryness as a result of low estrogen levels during and after menopause.
All of the above problems require appropriate investigations but most can be improved or resolved by using bioindentical hormone therapy.
