The older we get, the easier it is to put on weight. Aging, lifestyle and genetic factors all can play a role leading to overweight problems. When hormones change, as they do in peri-menopause and menopause you are more likely to gain weight around your middle. When you are younger it is more likely to be around your hips or thighs. The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute lists the following as contributing causes of overweight individuals:

  • Inactive Lifestyles – like watching more than 2 hours a day of TV.
  • Your Environment – work schedules, oversized food portions, lack of fresh fruits and vegatables.
  • Genetics – your genes may affect the amount of fat you store in your body and where.
  • Medicines – certain medications
  • Emotional Factors – eating when you are bored, angry or stressed.

What exactly does ‘overweight’ mean? Being overweight means that you have more body fat than is optimally healthy, considering your height. This tends to be more common in areas with greater food supply and a sedentary lifestyle. Sound familiar? There are now over 1 billion adults either overweight or obese. What is the difference? According to the National Institutes of Health (the NIH), you are considered to be overweight if your BMI is between 25-29.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention classifies obesity as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above.

There are 3 classes for Obesity:

  • Class 1 with a BMI of 30-34
  • Class 2 with a BMI of 35-39
  • Class 3 with a BMI of 40 or more.

Your BMI is......

less than 18.5: Underweight
18.5 - 24.9:Normal weight
25 - 29.9:Overweight
30 - 34.9:Class I Obese
35 - 39.9:Class II Obese
40 upwards:Class III Obese
